Question of the Week
Q: What are some tips on getting a good blood sample for blood glucose testing?
A: Although some newer meters require only a small sample, a good sized blood sample is needed to obtain an accurate blood glucose test result. To get the blood flowing, massage your fingers, hold them below the level of your heart and shake them, or warm them with water. Prick the sides of your fingers where there are fewer nerve endings and wait for a drop to form rather than squeezing your finger to obtain a blood drop. You may find that a lancing device is easier, but make sure that it works well, especially because they become less “springy” after continuous use. If you have trouble getting a good blood sample, or if the blood glucose results are erratic, check with your diabetes educator to ensure your meter is working properly or to brush up on your technique.
