Q: Is there a difference between addiction and dependence?
A: At one time the two terms were used interchangeably, however today they are considered to indicate slightly different concepts. Dependence usually refers to physical dependence, that is, if you stop the drug you experience withdrawal symptoms, for example the withdrawal symptoms of smoking cessation. Dependence does not necessarily occur with drugs of abuse, but can occur with other drugs such as decongestant nasal sprays. Addiction is the term used when dependence is psychological, that is drug seeking behaviour - compulsive, relapsing drug use despite negative consequences. You want to avoid both addiction and dependence!
